Hype Cart

Putting your first cart drawer live

Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read

Your cart drawer goes live in three steps: enable the Hype: Cart Drawer app embed in your theme, create a cart and choose a design, then activate it. Until you do all three, shoppers keep seeing your theme's own cart.

The app's home page shows a guide, Get started with Hype Cart Drawer, with the two steps it can check for you.

Step 1 — Enable the app embed

The drawer reaches your storefront through a theme app embed. Without it, nothing renders, no matter how many carts you have.

The quickest route is from the setup guide: on the home page, in Enable Hype Cart Drawer app embed, click Enable in theme, turn on Hype: Cart Drawer, and click Save in the theme editor. The step marks itself complete when you return to the Hype tab.

Full instructions, including what to do when the embed is on the wrong theme, are in Enable the app embed.

Step 2 — Create a cart and choose a design

  1. On the home page, click Create cart.
  2. On Choose a design, pick a template — Bold, Noir or Atelier — and, if you want, a Template color. The real drawer is docked beside the cards, so you are choosing against the thing itself.
  3. Click Create cart.

You land in the editor. Everything you picked here can be changed later, so do not agonize over it. See Choosing a design.

A new cart already contains the modules most stores need: trust badges and the product list, plus a discount code field, order summary, checkout button and payment logos in the footer. An announcement bar, a progress bar, a product upsell and shipping protection are included but switched off, ready for you to turn on.

Step 3 — Activate the cart

A cart with the status Draft shows nothing to shoppers. Activation is the on/off switch — there is no separate master toggle.

  1. In the editor, make your changes and click Save.
  2. Click Activate.

The status badge changes to Active and shoppers start seeing your drawer instead of the theme's cart. To turn it off again, click Deactivate in the editor, or use the Cart actions menu on the home page.

Activation changes do not reach shoppers instantly. Shopify serves storefront pages from a cache that a Hype save does not clear, so a change usually appears within minutes and occasionally takes longer. This is the same note the Activation panel shows. See My changes aren't visible on the storefront yet.

What "replacing the theme's cart" means

While a cart is active, by default Hype:

  • opens the drawer when a shopper adds something to the cart;
  • opens the drawer instead of your theme's cart when the cart icon is clicked;
  • takes over add-to-cart forms that would otherwise reload the page;
  • hides your theme's own cart drawer and cart notification.

Each of those is a switch you can turn off in the editor's Behavior panel. See Opening the drawer and Taking over the theme's cart.
