Activating and scheduling a cart

Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read

Activation is the on/off switch for your cart drawer — there is no separate master toggle. A cart with the status Draft shows nothing to shoppers; a cart with the status Active replaces your theme's cart for the markets it claims. Click Activate in the editor's header, or use Activate in the Cart actions menu on the home page.

The Activation panel decides who sees the cart and when.

Markets

Markets has two options:

  • All markets (the default) — the cart claims every market you sell in.
  • Specific markets — a checkbox per Shopify market, with your primary market marked "(primary)".

Choosing Specific markets pre-selects your primary market so a cart never accidentally claims nothing. If you clear every box the panel warns you: "No market selected. This cart won't show anywhere until you pick one."

Use specific markets when a region needs different copy, currency-appropriate goal thresholds or different payment logos. Give each market its own cart rather than trying to make one cart serve all of them.

Schedule

Schedule has two options:

  • Always active (the default) — the cart runs for as long as it is active.
  • Scheduled — the cart only resolves inside a time window.

With Scheduled chosen you set a Start date and Start time. Times are offered in half-hour steps. Tick Set an end time to add an End date and End time; the end defaults to one week after the start. An end before the start is rejected with "The end must be after the start."

All times are in your store's time zone, and the panel names it: "Times are in your store's timezone (…)."

You cannot activate a cart whose window has already ended — the app answers "This cart's schedule has already ended. Update it first."

Running more than one cart

Several carts can be active at once as long as their claims do not collide. A holiday cart scheduled for Black Friday can sit alongside an evergreen all-markets cart, and a cart for Germany alongside a cart for France.

When claims do collide, Hype asks before it acts. Activating or re-scoping a cart that overlaps a live one opens Deactivate conflicting carts?:

This cart targets the same markets and time window as the following live carts. Continuing will deactivate them:

The list names each cart that will be turned off. Deactivate and continue applies the change; cancelling leaves everything as it was.

Which cart wins for a given shopper follows a fixed order: a scheduled cart claiming their market with a live window, then an unscheduled cart claiming their market, then the all-markets fallback.

Changes are not instant

Below the fields, the panel carries this note:

Activation changes reach shoppers when Shopify refreshes its page cache, usually within minutes, occasionally longer.

This applies to everything a shopper sees: saves, activation, deactivation, and the start and end of a schedule. Shopify serves storefront pages from a cache that a Hype save cannot clear, and reloading the page does not force a refresh.

Plan around it rather than fighting it:

  • Activate a promotional cart a little ahead of when you need it live.
  • Do not judge a change by reloading once. Give it a few minutes.
  • Never test a change by activating and deactivating repeatedly — you will only see stale pages.

See My changes aren't visible on the storefront yet.

Turning the drawer off

Click Deactivate in the editor, or use the Cart actions menu on the home page. With no active cart resolving for a shopper, the drawer renders nothing and your theme's cart behaves exactly as before.

Deleting an active cart has the same effect, and the delete dialog says so: "This cart is live. Deleting it turns the drawer off until you activate another cart."
