Product upsell
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
Product upsell is a one-card-at-a-time carousel of products you pick, each with a one-tap Add button. Every new cart includes it, switched off and with no products chosen.
To use it, expand Product upsell, turn on its switch, click Pick products, and choose up to 12 products.
Picking products
Pick products opens Shopify's product picker with variants shown. Two details matter:
- The first variant you select is what the card adds. If you want the medium in blue, select that variant, not the product as a whole.
- Draft and archived products are filtered out of the picker.
Each chosen product becomes a row in the editor showing its thumbnail, title, variant and price, so you can tell at a glance which handle is which. Remove a row with its delete button. Pick products disappears once you reach 12.
Badges
Each row has a Badge field — a short line printed on the card, such as Bestseller or Pairs well. Leave it empty for no badge.
Separately, the card shows its own discount badge when the product has a compare-at price higher than its price. That percentage is calculated by the drawer and is not something you set.
What shoppers see
The card shows the product image, title, price (with the compare-at price struck through when there is one), your badge, and an Add button. Arrows page between cards.
The title of the block and the button label are editable:
- Title — default
Complete your order. - CTA label — default
Add. - Add failed label — default
Could not add. Try again., shown briefly when an add does not go through.
When cards do not appear
The module hides itself entirely when the cart is empty — an upsell before there is anything to complement is noise.
Individual cards are also dropped, silently, when the product cannot be sold right now:
- the variant is unavailable or sold out;
- the product has been deleted or unpublished.
Product data is read live from your storefront when the drawer opens, so prices and availability are always current — they are not frozen at the moment you picked the product. If none of your picks are available, the module renders nothing rather than showing an empty carousel.
In the editor preview
The preview cannot reach your storefront's product endpoint, so it draws the cards from the title, image and price captured when you picked each product. A price you changed in Shopify since then shows the old value in the preview and the new one on your store.
Attribution
Anything added through the drawer — including these cards — is tagged, so the revenue shows up in the Add. revenue column on the home page. See Reading the numbers.
Translation
The block's Title, CTA label and Add failed label, and each product's Badge, all carry translate buttons when your store publishes more than one language. See Translating your drawer.
